Its been few months since I have started using Windows 7 after its official launch….. Wow…is the expression I generate every time I work on my laptop. The core built, the performance, the graphics, the applications, the compatibility, drive encryption, driver database and the Boot time….. these are the top features that I loved.

I started using computer when I was at 5th standard…there I used DOS ..named Disk Operating System.. which was all command based and no graphics at all…. later I learned lil bit on Windows 95, that was my first experience on graphical OS. Then later I learned Microsoft office on Windows 98 OS which was indeed a lot better than Win95.

When I went to college..I bought my first computer which was loaded with Windows XP. I personally like WinXP a lot… it’s a very performance driven OS and as for Windows is known for its user friendliness..XP tops the list. But installing drivers for various hardware was the only minus point I found in it…

Then came the VISTA era…expected a lot out of it…but was a flop show. It’s too heavy and the performance is bad. Though they worked out a lot with the graphics and made a great graphics interfaces but seriously lacked performance.

With the entry of Windows 7…. I got the graphics of VISTA with the performance of WinXP. Hehe…well this is the OS worth admiring. Its simply wow… I won’t tell you much about it….install it…and feel it for yourself. Trust me..you will never uninstall it .. ;-D

Yesterday….when I was walking along the city road… A boy came upto me and said…”Hey..you are form the Band Reallusion right… ?” I smiled and said “Yes bro…I am…”. He told me that he had been in one of our shows…and enjoyed listening to us….he had also read the article that came up in the paper….and he was looking forward to see us perform again…

I don’t know how much knowledge that kid has about music….. but when someone says that…it really feels good. At least we are making our audiences enjoy us… It was a great inspiration….

The Reallusions…….we are not bunch of professional music players nor singer….. but we are trying to be one… and I believe we will be one….someday.. Some people are born talented…some work hard for it…. we are neither of them….but our interest towards music is so much…that we try giving our best shots…and learn every time out of our mistakes….

There are many Rock Bands in Bhutan……to name a few… Who’s your dady..where my friend Nawang plays the Lead Guitar…..its an awesome rock band….. and Fallen Angels… etc,… To compare us with them…..we lie in base zero…. we are just the learners and they are the professionals….. But how ever… we are trying to build our own identity as well.

The Reallusions…..are picking up…. slowly .. and in this …we gonna take our time…. Our members..Manoj(Drums),Tek(Guitar),Amit(Guitar/Keys) , Kesang(Bass) & me..Bharat(Vocals)…we are all working in private IT industry…and its very difficult for us to avail time for practice….. but never the less…its our interest….thats keeping us all going…..

We…have done few shows….and we look forward to do more….& I guess that’s how we learn more…..

Recently I had been attending RedHat Enterprise Linux Certified Engineer training program initiated by RIM,Thimphu:Bhutan. There are about 20 participants from the private & corporate sectors attending this training program, and I was fortunate enough to attend it on behalf of Tashi Infocomm Ltd. Though I am more into networking stuffs..like configuring Routers,Firewalls, switches etc… but learing systems with Linux is a great experience…and I am enjoying every bit of it…

Lets get to the point…now..
As my profession requires me to….I had been trying to understand the security in a network a lot. And securing a secure remote login protocol like ssh…grabbed a lot of interest of mine…

SSH is a remote login protocol which basically provides a secure encrypted connection unlike Telnet which is not encrypted making it unsecure.

Securing ssh remote login ..

Imagine a situation where you have to login your server remotely. Now the normal trend is you perform ssh login command from your laptop and logn to your server using your username and password. Since the web is so risky..hackers might try to obtain differnet combination of username and passwords… what if your password was not strong enough and the hacker could click one combination and login? or what if someone from your company peeped your password and tried logging in your server from internet….??

Here is a way to secure that…

The concept of RSA & DSA key generation comes here.. its pretty cool. Now this works by generating a key and a passphrase from your laptop which would be a unique one.. Then we have to copy this key to a file in the Linux server. Now whenever a user tries to login to the Linux server it checks for the key.. so only you accessing only from your laptop can login to the Server.

How to do it ??? Hold on….here it comes….

steps in RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.

From root prompt in your laptop generate the key using the command.
$ ssh-keygen -t dsa
it will ask you to type in the filename (copy the same as given in the brackets) and passphrase(type and sentence twice..but do remember it)..

Repeat step 1 in server as well.

Copy your public key from your laptop to the Server at /.ssh/id_dsa.pub
$ ssh-copy-id -i .ssh/id_dsa.pub root@servername

It will prompt you for server’s roots password, ..ente the password

Try connecting …… done.

I tried learing it before but didn’t get proper help….. I hope if the above helps you in any way….I will be pleased.

Thanks…..

Knowledge is free....(my fren Vicky, A security analyst used to say that often..)

Much awaited Hi-Speed Wireless Internet Services will hit Thimphu & other districts in Bhutan soon. With the partnership of Bharti Airtel & Tashi InfoComm Limited, a reliable Fiber Optic link has been established between India & Bhutan. And with the DS3(44.736 Mbit/s) data bandwidth coming through the link it adds to the opportunity for Bhutanese Firms & individuals to explore the global Net at a very reasonable rate.

I have been working on this project lately and exploring the wireless feasibility for a terrain place like Bhutan. It seemed quite difficult at the beginning but with the solutions from Proxim Wireless , it just got better.

We will be basically deploying Wi-Max technology which is the latest & the fastest wireless technology so far. Also for some selected areas we will be creating a wi-fi hotspots where anyone with a laptop or a wi-fi enabled mobile can access internet.

ISP Section, Tashi InfoComm Limited, that’s where I work as a Network Engineer…has been trying hard to bring Hi-Speed internet services to the customers in Bhutan. Things are going great so far…lets hope for the best.

Lately I was working on a newly purchased Cisco Router for a vpn tunnel configuration, and to my supprise the password I set initally didn’t work the next time I boot the router… Had a tought time figuring out the solution to reset the password since I had been working more on Huawei products.

Did a couple of reseach online and took some guide tips from my General Manager who is a complete gueius when it comes to Networking & Systems, and then was able to reset the password using the rommon technique.

Thought sharing it online would be of some help to people facing the same problem. So here we go…

Please note, these are the GENERAL procedures but procedures vary on varying devices!

power off and back on the device

hold down control and hit BREAK (may have to do this a few times)

Once you are at the rommon> prompt, type confreg.

Say “n” to all options except this one: enable “ignore system config info”? y/n [n]: y

Say “n” to all other options

once back at the rommon prompt, type reset ,the device will reboot

Once the device is booted, you will know that you are bypassing the config because you will be asked this question (say no) ..Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: no

Once booted, if you do a show version, you will see that your config register is 0×2142.

Now, you can either go to enable mode and do a show startup-config to see what the enable password is OR, if you have an enable secret password set, you can replace it by doing a copy start run, then going into global configuration and creating a new enable secret with enable secret cisco, then copy it back with copy run start.

Now, you want to change the config register back. In global configuration, type config-register 0×2102

save your configuration with wr or copy run start

reboot the device and you should be back with your original configuration but with a password that you know!

Do let me know if you need further information…

During my web development experience which has been more than 2 years now….I noticed that the common question that my clients had on their mind was “Static or Dynamic website??”….Often I explained them about both the concepts….

Before you go to a webmaster for a website to be developed .. it is important to know the difference so that you can determine the best solution for your website.

Let me explain you these concepts……

Static Websites

A static site is a website that is written entirely using HTML. Each web page is a separate document and there are no databases or external files that are drawn upon.

This means that the only way to edit this type of website is to go into each page and edit the HTML. So you would have to do it yourself using a web page editor such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver, or pay your web developer to make updates for you.

Dynamic Websites

A dynamic website is written using more complex code - such as PHP or ASP - and has a greater degree of functionality. For instance, many dynamic websites can be controlled by a CMS(content management system). This means that you will potentially be able to make updates without needing any knowledge of HTML or any website software.

Each page of a dynamic website is generated from information stored in a database or external file. And the content management system that you may use to maintain your website directly modifies this stored information.

Which one do you prefer?

Many people prefer dynamic websites because they have a lot of benefits.

1. Dynamic sites reduce ongoing maintenance costs,

2. Make data management very efficient,

3. Enable the addition of any future addons such as data feeds or a comprehensive site search.

4. They also make it impossible to destroy the layout, as might happen if you edit it from a web page editor.

5. Above all…it makes you website interactive rather than just text displaying page.

There are some drawbacks to using dynamic websites as well.

1. First, they usually cost more to develop, because they require more complex coding, as well as the development of a content management interface to enable you to maintain your website.

2. Second, you will need to obtain web hosting which supports databases and dynamic languages. Fortunately, most hosts do offer these features by default.

Well….these are all about the concepts… Now I guess its onto you to decide which one serves your purpose the best and cost saving in a long run….

Do contact me if you require further detailed clarifications….I would love to help you out understand these concepts.

During our 9am - 6pm work hours….the most refreshing and fun time is during the lunch break. Guess why..?? We get to be together..,chat,joke…have fun….but above all eat. Trust me…the food is more delicious than a five star’s dishes.. hehe…having a little sneak and pick from everyone’s meal…turns out to be a food full of different varieties..and the hunger strike till 1pm adds more to it…hehehe..

Really….Lately I discovered that having lunch at office…is simply great…
